The situation in Africa
In Africa, hunger is increasing at an alarming rate. Economic woes, drought and extreme weather are reversing years of progress so that 237 million sub-Saharan Africans are chronically undernourished, more than in any other region. In the whole of Africa, 257 million people are experiencing hunger, which is 20% of the population.
People suffer daily for basic necessities such as food and clean water. Jobs are scarce, and wages are minimal. Many people live on less than £1 a day.
Key Facts
In 2012, 3.5 million children in Africa were two-parent orphans (had
lost both parents), and another 28.6 million children were single-parent
orphans, bringing the total number of orphans to 32.1 million.
Half of the African population lives in poverty. These people do not have access to basic human needs, such as nutrition, clean water, shelter and more.
