Heavy Rain Triggers Fatal Flash Floods in Eastern Afghanistan
Families across eastern Afghanistan have been devastated by catastrophic flash floods following torrential monsoon rains. Entire communities have been overwhelmed as powerful floodwaters swept through homes, businesses and farmland, leaving families with nowhere to turn.
The worst-affected areas, including Nuristan Province, have witnessed widespread destruction. Search and rescue teams continue to look for survivors as many people remain missing, while authorities have warned that further heavy rainfall could trigger additional flooding, placing thousands more lives at risk.
The Situation
At least 23 people have lost their lives, more than 80 have been injured and over 100 people remain missing after devastating flash floods struck eastern Afghanistan.
Many survivors have lost everything they owned. Families are now facing:
- Homelessness
- Food shortages
- Lack of clean drinking water
- Limited access to medical care
- Ongoing danger from further flooding
With more heavy rain forecast across several provinces, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate.
